Introduction: A New Kind of Playground
Hey FitFAM, Tjuan Hicks back at it again with another Fitventure from this weekendโand let me tell you, this one was a refreshing change of pace. Iโve been moving through the DallasโFort Worth metroplex for years now, and even though Iโve explored more gyms, studios, and training spaces than I can count, the city still has a way of surprising me.
Thatโs one thing I love about fitness adventuresโitโs not just the workouts, itโs the places, the people, and the unexpected finds. Every week feels like peeling back another layer of this massive metro, and somehow, the DFW just keeps on giving.
This weekendโs discovery? A hidden workout playground tucked underneath bridges and mix masters in North Dallas. Yeah, you read that rightโconcrete, underpasses, and open hills turned into a full-on training ground. Some people might see โwasted space,โ but I see potential. And clearly, Iโm not the only one.
Spotlight on Untapped Spaces
Iโll admitโI have a creative mind when it comes to fitness. I canโt drive past a hill or open field without thinking, โMan, thatโd be a great spot for sprints or a boot camp.โ Weird? Maybe. But the way I see it, every city has hidden corners waiting to be transformed into movement spaces.
This workout group clearly thinks the same way. They set up shop beneath a web of overpasses where bridges met like iron gates, creating this gritty, urban entrance that felt like a scene out of an action movie. Push a little further in, though, and the view opens into a green, expansive parkโthe kind of spot youโd never find if you werenโt looking for it.
Honestly, if it wasnโt for this group and for one of our own Fit Fam brothers, Greg, I never would have discovered it.
Shoutout to Greg: A Fit Fam Milestone
Before I dive deeper into the event, let me hit pause and shine some light on my guy Greg.
Gregโs been rolling with us for about 3 months now. He started his journey with one main goal: get under 200 pounds. Wellโฆ not only did he hit that milestone, he blew past it.
And hereโs the kicker: Gregโs a truck driver. That means hours on the road, limited access to gyms, and irregular schedules. Most people in his shoes would use that as an excuse to skip workouts. But Greg? He figured it out. He adapted. He carved out time for weekday workouts wherever he landed, and then linked up with us for our weekend Fitventures.
Thatโs the power of the Living Fit systemโyou donโt just work out, you live it. And Greg is living proof.
So if youโre out there making excuses, rememberโyouโre no busier than Greg. If he can make it happen, so can you.
And while Iโm at itโฆ let this also be my invitation to you. Donโt just read these reviews, come live this with us. Every week we find new trainers, new workouts, new places, and new fuel for the body. Itโs not just fitnessโitโs lifestyle, community, and exploration rolled up in one.
The Scene: Hills in Dallas Takes Over the Park
Pulling into this park, I noticed it wasnโt just one group making use of the space. There was a 5K race happening, a cricket match running full swing, and then tucked away at the far endโour crew, the Hills for Dallas group.
Thatโs when I knew we were in for something special.
For those who donโt know, โHillsโ style workouts have a reputation in cities like Atlanta and Charlotte. Theyโre gritty, competitive, and intense, mixing cardio with strength and a whole lot of sweat equity. I was proudโand honestly hypedโthat Dallas now had its own version.
Meet the Trainer: A NOLA Voice in DFW
The energy of this session was driven by the trainer-host, a dude originally from New Orleans. You could hear it in his accentโthick, authentic, and full of that Southern flavor. That alone gave the event a unique vibe.
But it wasnโt just his voiceโit was the organization. These guys had it together:
- Tents for shade
- Wristbands to divide the groups
- Cones marking drills
- A bullhorn for commands
- Even weekly prizes and guest appearances to keep things spicy
And get thisโtheyโre not even a year in. Just 17 weeks of existence and already looking like a polished brand. Thatโs hustle.
The Warm-Up: Track-Style Prep
The session started with a structured track-and-field-style warmup. None of that lazy jogging-in-place nonsenseโyou could tell this coach knew what he was doing.
We lined up in rows and worked through dynamic stretches and movement prep drills:
- High knees
- A-skips
- Butt kicks
- Walking lunges
- Arm circles
- Controlled walk-throughs
It wasnโt just about loosening up; it was about activating the body and getting us all moving in rhythm.
Phase 1: Footwork & HIIT Drills
After the warm-up, we split into groups (thank you wristbandsโthat system was gold).
My group rotated through footwork ladder drills, cone sprints, and HIIT bodyweight stations. Think quick feet, lateral shuffles, mountain climbers, and squat jumps. Each station kept us moving at high intensity but short bursts.
The pacing was on pointโjust enough time to catch your breath before moving to the next drill.
Phase 2: Sprint to the Hill
Once both groups cycled through, it was go-time. We sprinted to the back section of the park where the hill waited like a silent beast.
At first, they had us approach it slow and controlled. Marching up, jogging back down. Just testing the incline. But the coach warned us: โDonโt get too comfortableโthis is just the warm-up.โ
Then came the whistle.
BEEP. Sprint.
BEEP. Back down.
BEEP. Up again.
No mercy.
Phase 3: King of the Hill Challenge
And thenโฆ the grand finale.
This group has a traditionโthey crown a King and Queen of the Hill each week. The challenge: 5 hill ascents and descents as fast as you can.
The winner gets the chain, the glory, and bragging rights until next week.
Now, Iโll be real with youโI didnโt come to win, but I did come to compete. Something about running side by side with ex-football linebackers and lightning-fast sprinters brings out another gear in me.
I pushed. I grinded. My lungs were on fire, my legs jelly. By the last descent, I couldnโt even feel my knees.
But I finished. Proudly took second place.
Not bad for a Fitventure weekend warrior, huh?
The Vibe: Energy, Music, and Community
One of the coolest parts? These guys knew how to set the tone.
The playlist was all Y2K throwbacksโSoulja Boy, Pretty Ricky, early 2000s vibes. The crowd was feeling it. Between sprints and drills, youโd see people busting out little dance moves.
And after the workout, they turned the session into a mini dance party. That post-grind celebration made the whole experience even more memorable.
Overall Rating: 4.9 out of 5
So, hereโs my breakdown:
โ
Organization โ On point (tents, wristbands, stations, prizes)
โ
Energy โ High, consistent, and contagious
โ
Programming โ Well-structured mix of warm-up, drills, sprints, and challenge
โ
Music & Vibe โ Perfect throwback mix
โ
Community โ Supportive and welcoming
The only reason Iโm not giving a full 5? My legs still havenโt forgiven me.
But honestly, this group is only going to grow. Theyโve already got partnerships with other workout groups like Dallas Run Club lined up. If youโre in North Dallas, donโt sleep on them.
