2025 | Week 5 | A FIT-VENTURER’S EXPERIENCE
As an almost 60-year-old energetic and emphatic fit mom, my mission is to explore the best in fitness. My journey has taken me across the country, experiencing the finest in gyms, trainers, and programs. This weekend, I found myself at Dream Performance in Fort Worth, TX, ready to take on the Saturday morning group workout session with none other than the legendary “Big Kat.”
Looking for a way to add some excitement to your life that could CHANGE your life!

The Big Energy of Big Kat
Walking into Dream Performance, I immediately felt the electric energy in the air. The space was filled with iron, grit, and a no-nonsense vibe. And then there was Big Kat—a towering force of a man, well over six feet tall, built like the football linebacker coach he is. His presence alone commands respect, but what truly sets him apart is his deep knowledge of fitness. Unlike many trainers who lean toward cardio and aerobics, Big Kat’s expertise lies in weightlifting and functional strength training.
A Slow Burn Before the Fire
The session began with a light warm-up: jogging, high knees, lunges, and dynamic stretches. It felt like a deceptive calm before the storm. Just when I thought we were easing into things, Big Kat amped it up. The warm-up transitioned into an intense sequence, priming our muscles for the real work ahead.
The Workout: A Test of Strength, Endurance, and Mental Toughness
Big Kat’s approach is pure gridiron-style training. He sets up functional group stations, each focusing on supersets and multi-level lifts. We cycled through deadlifts, kettlebell swings, weighted squats, push presses, sled pushes, resistance training drills, YOU NAME IT, Big Kat can dish it out. Every station targeted a muscle group with precision, and I could feel the burn setting in by the second round.
What I appreciated most was his ability to pair movements strategically. Instead of just exhausting the body, his method sculpts and strengthens. After years of fitness experiences, I can confidently say that this was one of the most effective strength-based group workouts I’ve attended. It left me feeling worked out, not just wiped out.
Organization Hiccups
While the workout itself was phenomenal, one thing that slightly derailed the flow was Big Kat’s “on-the-spot” structuring. Unlike some trainers who meticulously plan each movement, Big Kat formulates his plan just before class begins. This leads to some hiccups in execution.
Throughout the workout, he often had to pause and re-explain the station rotations, movements, and rep schemes. While I understand this approach works well for his high school athletes—who might need constant reminders—adults in a fast-paced one-hour class need efficiency. These moments, where he clarified directions again and again, took away from the class’s overall momentum.
Tweaks to Elevate the Experience
One simple tweak could take Big Kat’s class to the next level: a structured attention system. A call sign, a whistle, or a chant-response system could make transitions smoother and keep the class locked in. For example:
- A loud “Two claps!” followed by a class “Boom!” could instantly refocus attention.
- A quick whistle to signal movement transitions could cut down wasted time.
- A large whiteboard with the workout layout could reduce repeated explanations.
Additionally, timing adjustments are key. If he says “10 seconds of rest,” it needs to be 10 seconds—not 30. This could be fixed with a simple timer and set signals to keep everyone accountable.
Final Verdict: A Must-Try for Strength Enthusiasts
Despite minor organizational issues, Big Kat’s workout delivers real results. His class isn’t about jumping around for sweat; it’s about building strength, resilience, and true muscle endurance. I left feeling sore in the best way possible—like my muscles were worked, challenged, and sculpted. That’s the sign of a well-designed fitness session.
